Third Parties Form Coalition

by Colin Gibbs, Denver Daily News

DENVER - Claiming they're squeezed out of the political picture bythe Democrats and Republicans, Colorado's five independent partiesannounced they've joined forces this election year.

Lagos hotel roomsRepresentatives from the American Constitution Party, Colorado ReformParty, Green Party, Liberarian Party and Natural Law party held apress conference yesterday at the state Capitol to announce theformation of the Colorado Coalition of Independent Political Parties.

Victor Good of the Colorado Reform Party said the groups may holdvastly different ideologies, but share a common problem in gettingtheir messages out.

"We're not competing for the same voters," Godd said. "What wereally need is voter education."

Karlstad hoteles baratosClaiming Colorado media outlets tend to minimize coverage of "third"parties, Good said the number of unregistered and unaffiliated votersin the state is evidence of a disaffected public. A third ofColorado voters are unaffiliated, he said, and as many as 50 percentchoose not to vote.

"That means a majority of Coloradans don't believe in the two majorparties," said Good, who's running in the 7th Congressional District.

The coalition's top priorities include election reform, increasedvoter registration and common candidate support.

Doug Campbell of the American Constitution Party said a two-partysystem leaves many Americans without a voice.

"Oftentimes, the major political parties advocate a 'one size fitsall' policy," said Campbell, a candidate for U.S. Senate. "(They)have a stranglehold on the political process."

While less than one percent of Colorado voters are registered asaffiliates of third parties, organizers say they believe morepublicity will lead to more party members.

"In most cases, people registering to vote in Colorado have no ideaother parties exist," Deanne Drda of the Natural Law Partyclaimed. "There has always been a choice, and now there's a voice."
