It's been a busy racing season already and NARC members have been active.The following isn't a comprehensive rundown of who's doing what, but it's the best thiseditor can do, based upon my own faulty memory and what other information NARC membershave supplied. Dub Smith hit the trails early in the season, snagging first place for Cat. 4/5 in theGeorgia Cyclocross Championships on Jan. 24. Smith took 13th in the Expert category at theMarch 7, Georgia Games mountain bike race. Also getting an early start in an unusual racewas David Lain, who took first place at both the Dec. 1 and Jan 1 UMCA CoorsMorgul-Bismark CompuTrainer Contest. Lain, who competes both road and off-road, was firstin the Beginner class at the Georgia Springfest mountain bike race.
At the Chattowah River to River mountain bike event, Lain moved up toExpert and crashed, breaking his bike, but still got 3rd in the 35+ category. The popularGreenville Training Series (March 6-7, 13-14) saw John Patterson doing well in the juniorevents, as well as racing in some of the Cat. 3 races. Doug Piner and Tony Scott were insome of the Cat. 4 events. David Poel also raced in Greenville, in Cat. 5's. Tom Louiejoined Tom Fahey in the Cat. 3 RR on March 6. Fahey returned to race the next day's Cat. 3circuit race. NARC scored big in the women's series at Greenville,
with Cathleen Ligman taking three wins and a third place to clinch the overall women'stitle. Also racing in the women's series was Jenn Cooper.
John Allison, Dean Peddle and John Green raced three of the Pro 1, 2 events, both at FortDonaldson and Fork Shoals. John Millsaps raced in three of the masters events for theseries. Gary Daniels also was active in the Greenville series in Cat. 4 events. DaveMagloire raced in the Masters 40+ in Greenville on March 6 and finished in the pack.Magloire also raced Masters 40+ at Brooks on March 27 and again finished in the pack, withGary Daniels putting on a wicked sprint to finish in the top five - also in the field wereDavid Lain (who had a breakaway going that
was caught and who finished in 6th place) and John Millsaps.
Brooks was a big day for NARC participation: Tony Scott raced well in the Cat. 4 event,along with Singe Morimoto, Doug Piner (who placed 9th), Joe Knoerle and David Abrahams.Eric Espino was in the Masters 35+ field, along with Dub Smith, who finished 12th. AlanGabrielli was in the Cat. 5 event. In the Pro 1, 2 event, NARC was represented by JohnAllison, Terry Duran, Vic Rodgers and Pete Antonvich. Allison got in an early 11-man breakwhich stayed clear, and he finished just in the money with 10th place. The Cat. 3 fieldincluded John Patterson and Tom Fahey. Cathleen Ligman was 5th in the women's race atBrooks. A new event on the calendar provided some unique racing on March 28, as foundthemselves on a NASCAR track in Senoia. Going 'round and round the
Bojnice Sheraton-Hotelbanked track were a number of NARC riders, including Alan Gabrielli who finished seventhin the Cat. 5 race and David Magloire who was 8th in the Masters 40+ event. Tom Louie wasin the Cat. 3 race. Gary Daniels, John Millsaps and Tony Scott were in the Cat. 4 event,with Daniels and Scott
finishing in the top ten. Vic Rodgers raced both the Masters 35+ (where he vinished 9th)and 45+ events - Ronald van Blerck placed second in the Masters 35+ race. Also racing inSenoia were John Patterson and Eric Espino. John Green and John Allison competed in thePro 1, 2 race at
Senoia. Just three days later, Allison flew to Cologne, Germany, where he will be racingon a locall amateur team from April through September.
At the Columbia Kids Crit on March 28, NARC was represented by Tom Fahey, who finished onelap down in the Cat. 3 event, and Cathleen Ligman, who was 6th in the women's event.Southern Cycling Operations staged at the River Road Time Trial on March 21 in MaryvilleTenn., and Vic Rodgers finished first in the 45+ category on this 18-mile, out-and-backcourse along a river.
Meanwhile, on the track, David Magloire competed at the Dick Lane Velodrome on April 7,finishing 6th in the Cat. 4, five-lap scratch event, and competed in the points race andunknown distance event.
Although it wasn't a race, Barclay Brown, Michel Lamar, John Allison and John Millsapstraveled to Dublin (Georgia, that is) and participated in the Dublin Century, held onMarch 21. Lamar, Brown and Allison did the full century (three of eight riders who did so)while Millsaps stuck with the 50-mile
version. Hans Mixdorf, Barclay Brown and Tom Cross continue their training in the Brevetsseries, as they shoot to qualify for the famous Paris-Brest-Paris event this comingAugust--anyone for a 600K ride?
Clothing Update
All Team 1999 clothing is sold out, except for a few pieces:
