Hate Newt? What's Your Credit Card Number?

Gary 'Bats' Pelphrey has found a new twist in his race to unseat NewtGingrich - campaign finance fraud.

Gary has just learned that there is at least one scam artist who thinksthere is widespread public dislike for Mr. Gingrich, and the scam artist is trying to cashin on it. A potential contributor called Gary's office yesterday to get his mailingaddress to make a contribution.

The contributor, from Suffolk County (Long Island), New York, told Garythat a couple of weeks ago he got a call from a telephone solicitor seeking contributionsto Pelphrey's campaign fund, saying that Pelphrey was running against Newt Gingrich andGingrich had enormous special interest funds. The caller offered to take the contributor'scredit card number for the donation.

Gary had received a similar call in early June from a potentialcontributor in the Washington, D. C., area. The person calling made no mention at thattime about being offered the option of credit card payment.

Gary attributed the call to an overeager phone solicitation campaign putin place by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The DCCC denied that theywere conducting such a campaign, and, to the best of Pelphrey's knowledge, the DCCC hasnot conducted any serious national support campaign on his behalf.

Although Gary admits that he needs money to even come close to matchingthe well-funded campaign of Mr. Gingrich, he wants everyone to know that the only'official' way to contribute to his campaign is to send contributions to his post officebox, 3235, in Marietta, Georgia, 30061.
