Who We Are

The MADRaT (Making a Difference Racing Team) is dedicated to supporting health andcommunity-related charities through sponsorship and promotion in long-distance cyclingevents. Through MADRaT, sponsoring companies can meet corporate giving goals whileparticipating in business and image-building promotions aimed at the large and expandingbase of fitness-oriented consumers!

MADRaT works with corporate and individual sponsors and supports national and regionalcauses including:

The Leukemia Society of America
Copenhagen luxury hotelsThe Mutiple Sclerosis Society
Advanced disease research, including AIDS
Children’s Health and Disease Research

The MADRaT team, with Team Captain Barclay Brown, rides and races the latest in hightech, recumbent bicycles. These "laid-back" bikes are not only more comfortableand safer than traditional upright bicycles, but also eliminate some common back, neck andnerve problems long associated with upright cycling. And they’re fast! MADRaT ridesLightning recumbent bicycles, which hold over 20 world bicycle speed records.

Sponsors receive recognition in MADRaT media appearances, and can arrange forliterature and product distribution, special appearances and demonstrations at majorevents. With MADRaT, a sponsor gets far more from their giving dollar than sponsoring anevent directly. MADRaT is the sponsor’s on-site promotions team. We invite you to bea part of the difference we’re making—we’ll make you look great!

Making A Difference

Sure, we could be just another sports marketing company. Sure, we could just ride ourevents and enjoy the weather, fitness and scenery. Sure, you could just send moneydirectly to charitable foundations or event sponsorship funds. But how much more fun towork together to make a direct, first-hand difference and see how it impacts the lives ofpeople like Leukemia patients Mel, David and Torey.

One ride last year was dedicated to a fine young man, David Farmer. David is 13 and hasAcute Lymphocytic Leukemia, a cancer of the blood-forming cells. Thirty years ago, hewould not have lived more than a few months. But now the overall cure rate for childrenwith Leukemia has increased from 4% in 1960 to 79% today. So progress is being made! ButLeukemia remains the #1 disease killer among children. Today, David enjoys cooking, music,Tae Kwan Do Karate, reading, and video games. His Leukemia is currently in remission afterseveral close calls and a bone marrow transplant.

Our honored patient in last Fall’s event was Torey McNight, a great little guy whowas diagnosed while in Kindergarten. He’s 8 now and I asked him how it’s beendealing with all this over the years. He looked me straight in the eye like someone manytimes his age and simply said "hard." But undergoing both chemotherapy andradiation, he’s now in remission and enjoying private school, baseball and inlineskating.

Of course, Mel, David and Torey are just three people we’ve made a difference forsince MADRaT began.

What kind of bike is that?

MADRaT bicycling team rides high-tech recumbent bicycles, which represent abreakthrough in comfort, safety and speed over ordinary upright bikes. Theseattention-getting bicycles make for great media exposure as the "high-tech bike ofthe future". Team captain Barclay Brown is a well-known recumbent rider and racer andis one of the most prominent cyclists in the Southeast.

Recumbents may well be the bicycle of the future. Cyclists experiencing neck, back andwrist pain, as well as those with the increasingly recognized impotence problemsassociated with conventional bicycle seats, find total relief in the recumbent cyclingposition. MADRaT’s uniqueness is in both the high-tech/speed and health/comfortbenefits of these attention-getting bicycles.
