Practice Reports Several folks who attended practices on Friday and Saturday gave glowing reports of Todd's success landing quads as well as the overall quality of his program, The 13th Warrior. One comment made by a former elite ice dancer was that during the program run-through he effortlessly landed the quad "to the music" and she gushed over the choreography. The warm up Todd's warm up at the event got off to a good start when he landed a 3 Axel straight away. Unfortunately, after three 3 Toes, Todd attempted a quad but sat down on it. He glared at the spot where he fell. Not a successful warm up. The Program As Todd set up for the start of the program, he took a visibly deep breath in preparation of what lay ahead. His first jump was the quad and while he did complete the revolutions he was unable to land it successfully and sat down. In addition, the rink was narrow at this venue and Todd landed the jump scarily close to the boards. But It was obvious he was displeased with this turn of events so it wasn't surprising that the 3 Axel combination that was to have followed the quad was reduced to a solo 2 Axel. Todd was then able to regroup and refocus on the remainder of the program. He began by landing a beautiful 3 Lutz. He followed that with a 3 Toe which was another quad attempt. To everyone's delight, Todd was able to land a gorgeous 3 Axel that looked effortless. Because Todd needed a combination jump for this format, he was left with no choice but to add a 2 Toe to what was to have been a solo 3 Sal. This program is probably one of Todd's finest programs with the dramatic and powerful choreography it contains. Based on the scores, the judges were very impressed with Todd's program as they scored it to be the best men's program of the evening and overall second only to Michelle's program. Todd is determined to land the quad and while he was disappointed that he wasn't able to get one on the record books in Kennewick, it's just a matter of time before he does. Possibly he'll have that success at his next competition -- The Masters of Figure Skating in Boise, Idaho on October 12, 2000. Additional Notes This was a great format and a wonderful opportunity for younger USA skaters to get some television exposure. | | Team Results | Total | | 1. | Kwan and Bradley | 117.1 | | 2. | Weiss and Stellato | 116.9 | | 3. | Eldredge and Kirk | 116.6 | | 4. | Ina/Zimmerman and Gardiner | 115.2 | | 5. | Cohen and Savoie | 115.1 | | 6. | Lang/Tchernyshev and McDonough | 113.7 | | 7. | Pensgen and Goebel | 111.4 | | | Men Results | Total | | 1 | Todd Eldredge | 59.0 | | 2 | Michael Weiss | 58.3 | | 3 | Ryan Bradley | 57.8 | | 4 | Matt Savoie | 57.2 | | 5 | Timothy Goebel | 56.7 | | | Ladies Results | Total | | 1 | Michelle Kwan | 59.3 | | 2. | Deanna Stellato | 58.6 | | 3. | Sasha Cohen | 57.9 | | 4. | Jennifer Kirk | 57.6 | | 5. | Andrea Gardiner | 56.4 | | 6. | Ann-Patrice McDonough | 55.2 | | 7. | Stacey Pensgen | 54.7 | | | Date September 30, 2000 Location: Tri-Cities Coliseum, Kennewick, WA Roster (as of 9/12/00) Team 1 Michelle Kwan Ryan Bradley Team 2 Stacy Pensgen Timothy Goebel Team 3 Todd Eldredge Jennifer Kirk Team 4 Michael Weiss Deanna Stellato Team 5 Naomi Lang/ & Peter Tchernyshev Ann-Patrice McDonough Team 6 Kyoko Ina & John Zimmerman Andrea Gardiner Team 7 Sasha Cohen Matt Savoie Exhibition Nancy Kerrigan Oksana Baiul | | | | Marks & Notes | Sasha Cohen (Team 7) | | Judges | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | Total | | Technique | 5.8 | 5.7 | 5.9 | 5.7 | 5.8 | 57.9 | | Presentation | 5.9 | 5.8 | 5.8 | 5.7 | 5.8 | | Music | To Love You More | | Costume | | | Notes | 2 Axel, 3 Flip, 3 Toe, 3 Sal Nice, but not spectacular, slow | | Matt Savoie (Team 7) | | Judges | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | Total | | Technique | 5.8 | 5.7 | 5.6 | 5.8 | 5.8 | 57.2 | | Presentation | 5.7 | 5.6 | 5.7 | 5.8 | 5.7 | | Music | Concerto in F and Bess You is My Woman Now (Gershwin | | Costume | | | Notes | 3 Sal (fell), doubled a 3 Axel attempt, 3 Toe, 3 Flip-3 Toe, double loop, spread eagle into a 3 Axel, shoot the duck into a 3 Lutz. Seven ladies, five men, one pair and one dance team will make up the individual teams. Each team member will skate an interpretive free skate or interpretive free dance. The interpretive free skate or free dance can be anywhere from 3 to 4 minutes in length. The teams and skating order were determined before the first practice. The individual scores for skating technique and presentation will be totaled for each skater and the combined marks for the skaters on each team will be considered the teams total score. The team having the most points will be declared the winner. Scoring guide: Judges award marks to each skater ranging from 0.0 to 6.0 based on the following scale. 0 - not skated 1 - bad, very poor 2 - poor 3 - average 4 - good 5 - excellent 6 - perfect Decimal points are used for exact placements such as 4.6 or 5.3. In skating, the high and low marks are not dropped, and all of the points are not added together, as some people believe. The exception is the Keri Lotion Figure Skating Classic, where these points will be added together to determine a team score. The marks for both skaters on each team will be totaled for a combined score. The team having the most points will be considered the winner. Skaters will be judged on both skating technique and presentation. In most competitions, each judges mark is actually converted into places 1st or 2nd. The skater who receive the highest mark from a judge earns a first place ordinal from that judge. The skater who receives the majority of first placements from the panel of judges wins that event. Interpretive Free skate: The interpretive free skating program consists of a variety of moves and elements selected for their value in enhancing the skaters interpretation of music and artistry. An interpretive free dance program is the skating by the couple of an exhibition dance which is a creative program with unprescribed dance steps and movements expressing the character of the music chosen to express a concept, story, theme or idea. The composition of the program is the couples choice although the theme must be developed through skating quality rather than excessive lying on the ice or inappropriate movements. The guidelines for tonights programs are: Duration: 3 - 4 minutes Props that are held in the hand, worn on the head or attached to the costumes are permitted. Singles - Minimum of five different jumps, at least two of which must be three or more revolutions,. Minimum of one jump combination in addition to the five different jumps, Minimum of four different spins. No restrictions on other elements. Pairs - Minimum of three lifts. Minimum of one solo jump. Minimum of one jump combination. No restrictions on other elements. Choice of music is unrestricted, although Interpretive free dance music should be predominantly vocal. | | | |
