The format for this USFSA Open was a team format featuring head-to-head match ups between Team USA and the World Team.
Todd debuted a new Interpretive free program at this event. And a new costume, too. The program uses the music from "1492: The Conquest" by Vangelis, the same soundtrack used by Elvis Stojko and Hartshorn & Sweiding. The new costume was actually purchased along with several other costumes with no particular program in mind and yet it is very well suited to this program. The costume features a vest that is similar in style to the Les Miz vest. The shirt and vest are both quite shiny. Colors are sometimes hard to determine under arena lights and it never quite looks the same on TV, but the shirt and vest appeared to be gold or topaz , the vest had some trim that looked brown or maybe burgundy and the pants were probably brown, too.
During the warm-up Todd fell on a quad attempt. He wasnt planning to include a quad in the program, he just uses the warm up as an opportunity to practice in front of an audience and judges.
During the program Todd landed a 3 Axel, 3 Axel/2 Toe, doubled a planned 3 Lutz, and 3 Loop.
The new program had Todd incorporating several new choreographic moves, courtesy of Olga V. -- who was board side at this event. New moves included knee slides, lunges, dance moves and he also held various positions longer then he usually does in a program. The most notable choreographic addition involved some very dramatic horizontal moves. Todd can writhe on the ice with the best of them -- thus the report title "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em". Judges seem to equate interpretation with rolling on the ice and/or the use of props. When asked if he would consider using props in a program he said "no props." But hes done time on the ice before with his Gethsemane program.
His recent performance of "Who Let the Dogs Out?" at Improv-Ice was quite memorable so after finishing his program, he received lots of dog-related presents from the audience. One fan held up a sign that read, "Who Let Todd Out?"

Even World Team members wanted to spend time with Todd. After he finished skating, Alexei entered the kiss and cry area and walked past the chair he was supposed to sit in to await his marks and instead headed directly to the empty spot on the bench where Todd was sitting.. Someone then had to tell Alexei he needed to sit in the chair instead
If the ordinals were ranked for the men, that Todd won.
