This competition will eventually air on TNT. Most likely in February. The following information was collected from a variety of reviews and reports. During the warm up for the men short program, Todd landed a quad out of steps, Alexei Yagudin followed with a quad-3/toe, Takeshi Honda also landed a quad/3 toe and finally Evgeny Plushenko topped them all with a quad/3 toe/2 loop.
Todd drew first to skate in the short program. Skating to a short program version of 1492 which he debuted as an IF at the recently held USFSA Winter Open, Todd attempted a quad out of steps but fell. He landed a 3 Axel. When attempting what was to be his combination jump, a 3 Lutz/3 Toe, Todd spiked his left foot and as a result he singled the Lutz and did not attempt the planned 3 Toe. Todd placed 5th in the short program.
In the Interpretive Free portion of the event, Todd skated his Il Mare Calmo Della Sera program and landed 3 Axel, 3 Toe/3 Toe (fell), 2 Lutz and a 2 Loop. Todd placed 3rd in the IF and was able to pull up to 3rd place in the final standings.
Note: When Todd was going into the lutz in the short program, he cut his left boot with his right boot blade. The blade cut his middle toe. The injury did affect his skating in the free interpretive free program which took place later that evening. But the good news is that the injury is not serious and it is not affecting his training preparations for Nationals. While he used 1492 as a short program at Japan Open, Todd will be using Exotica as his short program at Nationals.
