Ernst & Young, Disappearing Inc. Collaborate on Next-Generation Messaging Security and Policy Solutions

E&Y to provide development and sales support

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 25, 2000)Ernst & Young LLP, a global leader in professional services, and Disappearing Inc., developer of Disappearing Email, announced a strategic alliance to help customers implement advanced email policy solutions.

Under the agreement, E&Y will advise Disappearing Inc. on extensions to Lotus Notes that support Disappearing Email. In addition, Ernst & Young's Litigation Advisory Services Group will assist clients with their email and document retention policies based on technologies and services provided by Disappearing Inc.

Disappearing Email is an email policy management system that allows corporations to use email for sensitive discussions and centrally administer email policies. Disappearing Email lets users send email messages that vanish after a specified time, and reduces potential embarrassment and liability by preventing disclosure of old messages.

The increasing amount of high visibility litigation involving email has created a growing awareness that unmanaged email archives represent an extremely serious litigation risk facing corporations today, executives from both companies said.

"Helping our customers control their risks, including the risks posed by their email systems, is our main priority," said John Janes, national practice leader for Legal Technology Services at Ernst & Young. "Providing our clients with assistance and advice in implementing email policies is an important part of that effort, and through our relationship with Disappearing Inc., our clients will be able to reduce the risks associated with old email messages."

"As Disney's CEO Michael Eisner recently pointed out, ill-considered email messages and email-related litigation represent one of the most serious hazards facing corporations today," said Maclen Marvit, CEO of Disappearing Inc. "Our relationship with Ernst & Young will help large corporations reduce the risks inherent in today's messaging systems."

By reducing the risks associated with unmanaged electronic messages, Disappearing Email is making it possible for companies to safely engage in sensitive communications via email, without fear that old messages will be resurrected in some unanticipated context. This can be especially valuable for project teams, joint ventures, and for executive level discussions.

"Many companies want to manage the lifecycle of their paper documents, and many companies would want to manage the lifecycle of their electronic documents," said Paul Hoffman, Director of the Santa Cruz, Calif.-based Internet Mail Consortium (http://www.imc.org). "The alliance between Ernst & Young and Disappearing Inc. will provide the clients of both companies with a new way to manage their email archives."
