Ernst & Young and Disappearing Inc. Announce Strategic Teaming AllianceCustomers Gain Comprehensive Support for Email PoliciesNEW YORK and SAN FRANCISCO - June 12, 2001 -- Disappearing Inc., a provider of corporate policy management systems, and Ernst & Young LLP, one of the world's leading professional services firms, today announced a strategic relationship that will enable customers of both companies to control their electronic assets. Under the agreement, the two companies will work together on a broad range of activities to promote Disappearing Inc.'s product line and the professional services of Ernst & Young. Disappearing Inc. will actively assist Ernst & Young and its affiliates in their efforts to sell Litigation Advisory Services engagements that include the use of Disappearing Inc.'s products, and Ernst & Young will actively assist Disappearing Inc. in its efforts to provide professional records management services to its customers. In addition, the two companies will collaborate on records management education. "Email is easy to distribute and nearly impossible to erase. As a result, complying with discovery requests for email can cost millions of dollars, and companies are at risk from inappropriate use, uncontrolled distribution, oversized archives, and loss of sensitive information," said Mike Burkland, chairman, president and CEO of Disappearing Inc. "Ernst & Young's broad range of capabilities in risk management, litigation support, computer forensics, and records management will allow our customers to reduce these risks." Disappearing Inc.'s policy management system, Disappearing Email Policy Manager, helps enterprises manage the risks associated with unwanted email archives by automatically enforcing their email retention policies. With Policy Manager, Microsoft Outlook users can read, write, and send email messages the way they always have, but those messages will self-destruct at a time specified by the user or the user's corporate email policy. A Lotus Notes version of the Policy Manager is under development. "Our clients recognize the need to set and enforce email policies that reduce their legal risks," said John Janes, national practice leader for Legal Technology Services at Ernst & Young. "By integrating Disappearing Inc.'s offerings with our services, we can allow them to do that." Reducing the size of unmanaged email archives allows companies to save enormous sums when faced with litigation. "Producing email records in response to discovery requests costs $1 - $2 per message," Janes noted. "Companies today are being forced to settle lawsuits simply because electronic discovery costs are out of control. Disappearing Inc.'s products help put an end to that, while enabling companies to responsibly satisfy their legal obligations associated with document retention." Disappearing Email Policy Manager will be exhibited at the LegalTech show in Los Angeles from June 13 to 15, which is being sponsored by Ernst & Young.
