The museum is a free, non-profit autonomous organization, which preserves culture, folk-art and resources for educational exhibits, videos, classroom presentations and homebound services.
The museum provides a highly visible community center where anyone can go to re-live history today. It provides a wonderful place to educate the young people of our area. It gives them access to the past; it stimulates their imagination on many social and intellectual levels. It provides a forum where their natural questions of "Who am I, Where did I come from, Where am I going?" can be answered or imagined.
The museum is place where you can discover the rich value of relationships with people different from yourself and the modern lifestyle. You can compare the past with the present and the future. The West Louisiana community has a very special, unique presence, which has affected our national geography and history. It is a place where the American Indians found beauty and peace; the pioneers pushed to settle a new land called the Western Corridor; and where there was a "No-man's Land", a place where desperados and bad men hid from the laws of two nations.
It is also the place where quiet farmers and their wives paused in their private lives to rush as patriots to defend a small mission church called "the Alamo". It is the place which supplied much of the world with timber to build and fuel the "Industrial Revolution", and where the newly laid rails took harvested wood products away and transported in new settlers and tradespeople with factory made clothes cloth, furniture, and machinery.
It is also that place where the largest military maneuver in history occurred, "The Great Louisiana Maneuvers," a rehearsal for that war to end all wars (WWII).
