FEC Investigating Gingrich . . . Again

It's official: Newt Gingrich is under investigation again.

The Federal Election Commission has formally accepted for review acomplaint by Gary "Bats" Pelphrey, Democratic challenger for Georgia's 6thDistrict seat in Congress, that Gingrich and political committees under his control haveincompletely reported over $1,000,000 in donations.

Federal law requires that all candidates report the employer andoccupation of each individual contributing $200 or more. Checking the FEC recordsavailable on the Internet, Pelphrey found 1,786 contributions totaling $1,066,598 forwhich Gingrich committees failed to report either occupation or employer.

Pelphrey filed the complaint October 13. The FEC has now determinedthat the case is worthy of full investigation, and designated it a MatterUnder Review: MUR 4823.

These incompletely-reported contributions add up to about 15% ofGingrich's major individual donations received. The 15% error rate holds true for bothcontributor and dollar totals, and has persisted through two decades of Gingrichfundraising recorded on-line.

The respondents are Gingrich personally; his main campaign committee,Friends of Newt Gingrich; GOPAC (for those years Gingrich officially led it); andGingrich's newer 'leadership PAC', the Monday Morning PAC.

Gingrich has been widely quoted as saying that full disclosure ofcontributions is central to his idea of campaign-finance reform. Pelphrey says this isjust another example of Newt's devotion to the adage, "Do as I say, not as Ido."
