"Bats" Going Coast to Coast to Challenge Newt
Pelphrey to Be Featured Speaker at Nov. 1 Rally in SF


Gary "Bats" Pelphrey is going to great lengths to bring his message home to the
people of Georgia's Sixth Congressional District, and spread the word about his
challenge for the House seat now held by Newt Gingrich.

In an ongoing effort to face down Gingrich, Gary will travel to San Francisco
and appear at a rally Sunday, November 1 at Justin Herman Plaza (corner of Market and
Embarcadero). This event, organized by the Campaign for a New Congress, starts at
noon PST (3pm EST).

C-SPAN is expected to cover Sunday's event; CNN, Dateline NBC, and others may also
attend. In addition, arrangements are being made to show the rally live over the
Internet, and to cover a parallel "virtual rally" of thousands of e-mailmessages sent
to Congress.

C-SPAN carried live from the Mall in Washington, D.C. last Saturday's rally against
the excesses of Gingrich and special prosecutor Kenneth Starr. That program, including

The focus of the San Francisco rally, hosted by Mayor Willie Brown, is a call for
a nationally televised debate on the record of the Republican Congress, on the eve of
next Tuesday's election.

Among those joining Gary to speak will be author Michael Parenti, KPFA
investigative reporter Dennis Bernstein, and leaders of several groups involved in the
accommodation in ReadingWashington rally. Updates on the schedule are available on the Internet at

Pelphrey will call upon all registered voters to send a message by turning out to
vote on November 3. He will also renew a challenge to Gingrich to debate the issues in
front of the voters. Gingrich has not responded in 4-1/2 months.
