Pelphrey, Voters Win – There IS a Debate
East Cobb Civic Association Holds 1st Public Forum in 7 Months in 6th District

Sixth District Congressional candidate Gary Pelphrey claimed a victory for the peopletonight, as he and five of his opponents discussed the issues at a public forum at theEast Cobb Government Center in Marietta.

Reforming campaigns and elections, to involve and engage voters more in their government,is the top issue for Pelphrey. His other priorities include protecting Social Security,Medicare, and health care in general.

In opening remarks, Pelphrey thanked the East Cobb Civic Association, which sponsored thedebate. Admitting he had envied candidates who were able to debate in other races lastfall, he said: “I’ve been waiting a long time for this . . . and I think thevoters have, too.”

Last June, Gary challenged Newt Gingrich to debate the issues early and often, saying thetwo of them owed the voters that much. Gingrich, who withdrew before the results wereofficially certified, leaving the Sixth District unrepresented in the U. S. House andmaking the February 23 special election necessary, never responded.

Gary believes strongly in greater participation in elections – by voters and bycandidates. He has urged groups across the Sixth District to hold forums, and to bring allcandidates together to take part.

Pelphrey invited everyone who is concerned about the mess in government and wants to dosomething about it to attend one or more of the other candidate forums over the next fourweeks – and to vote on Tuesday, February 23. “Things won’t get better untilwe all treat democracy as more than just a spectator sport.”
