Valkenburg hotel roomsEditorial submission- response to "Let the flowers bloom"

By: Victor Good

In reference to your editorial from August 2, 2002, "Let the flowersbloom", I appreciate your acknowledgement of the importance of MinorParties.

hotel a SofiaHowever, you seem to have contradicted yourself. As you stated, "...halfof Colorado's eligible voters who are not affiliated with either theRepublican or Democratic parties". Later in your argument for keepingminor party candidates out of the debates you stated, "And in timelimited forums, such as broadcast debates, giving equal time to allcandidates is actually a disservice to the great majority of viewers, whousually want to see the Democrat and Republican slug it out".

You confirmed accurately that the vast majority of Colorado citizens DONOT align themselves with either major party. As far as what the viewerswant to see please use facts, not major party propaganda. The highestrated presidential debates ever were those which Reform Party candidateRoss Perot participated. Every debate since has seen a continualdecrease in viewers. The same goes for the Minnesota governor's race inwhich Reform Party candidate Jesse Ventura ran.

The truth of the matter is that the major party candidates do not wantminor party candidates in the debates for their own self-preservation.They want to be viewed as the only choice. Ross Perot and Jesse Venturaboth received double digit bumps in the polls after appearing in thedebates. The major parties are simply afraid of any REAL competition.

In reference to your Mao Zedong quote, flowers may bloom and a hundredschools of thought contend. I suggest, as a horticulturist, flowers mustbe fertilized and watered to grow. And in a democratic processcensorship is the herbicide and debate is the water and fertilizer.
